Springwell Special School also definitely closed, just received a text a while ago. All schools should text, would be much more efficient. Bit of a shame because snow has melted a bit not really enough for them to play in now either on their day off :(

Hello St C! haven't managed to catch up with you at AH yet.

Foundry Lane School is also closed, we only know because two people have already been who live next to it, and Head told them he couldn't get enough staff in. he's not announced on radio yet, very bad :/

I have just heard from my son. The pupils have now been sent home from Testwood School in Totton. How come they could not have made this decision earlier? The parents of these children will now have gone to work leaving the youngsters to fend for themselves.

that's disgusting Andrew, my daughter's school (Foundry Lane) which I posted about earlier but seems to ahve disappeared for some reason.. didn't announce any closure until 10 mins before school started! She would have left long before then if someone hadn't phoned me and told me who live opposite the school. Really bad not to make decisions so late. Better to shut rather than put pupils and parents in that situation.

Kids being sent back home when the whole of the rest of Hants has closed their schools, no of course it couldn't be helped! doh.... I think I'd be moaning if I was a pupil/parent and being put into that predicament. Every school should have a smooth contingency plan in the event of such an event, there is really no excuse these days of internet and phone technology!

I got a text from my sons' school at 6.40am this morning. How efficient is that! :D it was clear to everyone but the most dense that things would worsen/and or staff in outlying areas would not be able to travel in. Frankly, when all other schools are closed in area Redbridge should have too, they are putting pupils at risk opening up when more snow has been forecast!

when i use to go to school many years ago now, schools only got closed the once and that was the real bad winter of 63 - 64 and only sent home early the once, and winters was a lot worse than they are now.
but on that note the school teachers use to live very close to the schools.

adclose says...
11:39am Wed 6 Jan 10

could it be that schools close nowadays in bad weather because a little bit of snow/ice on the road, along with drivers who are totally untrained to drive in poor conditions and uncaring about anyone than themselves to boot puts all the little darlings at risk? that finally the schools realise this? they dont seem to care at any other time tho.
although, when potential drivers can be tested for their mental suitability to be behind a wheel and those unsuited be banned from doing so, the rest of us should all be as careful for our safety as our schools are about the safety of our kids in poor weather.(see? i am giving cholls the benefit of the doubt-even though its more to do with the fact that the staff cant be bothered to turn up, coz its too cold and they cant drive to work.. they cant walk either coz they live too far from the school).. all arguments in favour of all schools becoming boarding schools - where pupils and staff live on site, and all work six days/week. regardless of weather.

I don't mind whether the schools are open or closed, provided the information we get is clear and consistent.

We spent over an hour listening to local radio this morning while they read out ever-increasing lists of closed schools, hitting the F5 button to refresh the local radio website, and continously getting the engaged tone from the school's phone-line, before finally sending our son in to an open but half-empty school (in Shirley), while all the surrounding schools are closed.

I know headteachers get criticised whichever decision they make. Wouldn't it make more sense for the local education authority to decide whether or not to close all the schools in the region? This would reduce doubt and also reduce unnecessary travel across the city.

would be better if schools took on teachers that live close, so they could walk to work. would be even better if schools had there tie-houses for teachers/
i can remember an old teacher at mansel school that use to live in old redbridge road near the bridges, she would walk in to school most days, and the only time you use to see her old spit screen morris minor was on days when it rained and she was in her late 50's early 60's.

I remember (mid 70s) walking to primary school and the wood burning stove we had in our village school! lol... god I feel old! Can't remember it being shut ever... quite often remember being pulled out of snow drifts in my mum's Hillman Imp by local farmer who used to cruise around in his tractor looking for 'casualties'... I guess diesel/petrol is so expensive these days they don't have that luxury!

but Southy it's totally unrealistic to think that schools could recruit solely locally as there are such a high concentration of schools in the city, and not enough teachers who live within to staff all of them. Teachers seem to prefer these days not to work in the area they live in, I'm sure there are depressing reasons behind that, i.e. their personal life isn't affected if they have disruptive pupils.

Insurance, I feel, is the main problem - for every accident, however small, will increase the premium. Look at the expense of heating the whole school. Not only that parents (some) are ready to sue. Parents have jobs, they MUST keep them. - Politicians would not have envisaged the mess they would put us in. Are we expecting too much from our Parliament? We are in a straight jacket, some of us badly informed, but really, eventually, we have to take charge of our own families. I have trudged a mile (to Hedge End School) with wellies, chapped thighs; quarter bottles of iced milk on little boilers in each class room - its possible to survive and its time families take care of their own lives. Talk about tangled laws, now its time for families to untangle and take charge.

Cannot believe you are all moaning about the closure of schools, they would obviously be open if it was safe and practical to do so. As for suggesting that all teachers live close to the schools they work at RIDICULOUS!! I tried very hard to get to the school I work at this morning but got caught on back roads whilst trying to drop my own children off. Yes it's an inconvenience but get over it. Oh and I hope the 24 hours notice of the closure of some schools is enough for all of you!

I'm not sure the winters were a lot worse then southy. At st.marks middle shcool in the early 70's the old boiler would stop working at the slightest hint of a cold snap. However, we didn't wait for any broadcast by radio solent as it was assumed the school was open - heating or not! So on those cold days, our education was the priority, even if it meant wearing our coats in the classroom. :)

I think a key point that everyone is missing, regardless of heating etc is that alot of the first aiders were unable to get into schools today. I aware of several teachers that braved the elements and have had prangs in their cars en route to schools today. The head teachers will have all called into the radio, but I expect that the radio's were completley back logged so all of the information didn't get through. I am sure that its not only "school staff" having a snow day today!!

I don't think the majority of us are moaning about the closures per se, I have issues with the lack of information about it and delays in notifying parents. My daughter's school gave about 10 minutes notice via radio, by that time a lot of people had travelled into the school or had to phone the school themselves & couldn't get through. I quite agree it was unsafe to keep them open and Redbridge were really negligent in doing that, particularly as they've now had to send pupils home! However, it does seem ironic that in the 21st century we still seem so unprepared for these events. Interesting though you could 'drop' your own children off though to get into school, you should appreciate that logistic in others, particularly when they work in the emergency services, hospitals, council etc

who are you responding to exactly? many did not have 24 hours notice, the person below this certainly didn't!

And if we're wasting time on here then you are surely!? or did you post it through osmosis? good for you, we'll polish up the old halo for spending time with the kids :D I've just spent the last two hours playing with mine, but I also work from home too, so am having to multi-task and keep myself abreast of cancelling meetings etc in the next few days by reading the local news and it's part of my work to find out about local issues. Sorry if that upsets your sensibilities.

Flump, that was my point exactly. My daughter is at Foundry Lane, and just luck that i managed to hear about the closure from another parent before she left to walk there. We also got a text late-morning to say the roof was leaking the school would be closed tomorrow because of that, and to listen to solent again on Friday to see about further closures. Why they can't use texting as part of informing of weather closures, although I appreciate that shouldn't be the only method, it would encourage parents to keep their numbers up to date for one thing! There should be a coherent policy across all schools and heads should get together at one of their monthly meetings and discuss this. Many of us have children at more than one school.

Oh My God, Stumbled across this post as I have nothing else to do... and I can't believe what I'm reading!!! People, stop living in the past (60's/70's) it's 2010. A day off work won't kill anyone. I'm also shocked to read that people in Freemantle actually work for a living. As for teachers living near the schools they work at, I'm sure they earn far to much and live in more affluent areas of the county! People have obviously got too much time on their hands during the day as they seem to have all posted on here.

You seem to have contradicted yourself there don't you...

Hmmmmm, perhaps someone has taken time to make an account, find the relevant column after someone complained to them about it.

We might all be stuck at home all day but we're not above seeing right through such an obvious post ;)

On a positive note, "well done" to schools such as Upper Shirley High which use a global texting service to notify parents about closures well in advance.

Sounds like a contradiction to me :D just because you've made a bodge up and got your pants in a panic don't blow off at the rest of us, who are entitled to an opinion rather than be subject to your overblown sweeping statements and assumptions that you can post here and not waste time whilst the rest of us are (eh?). Cheer up you'll put your blood pressure sky high if you're not careful!

Like you say everyone is entitled to an opinion and mine was expressed.

I think you need to spend more time "working at home" rather than trawling through the Echo stories making stupid comments about schools not giving you enough notice about shutting. In my opinion, I would think parents like you pass blame on schools when your kids don't do so well rather than supporting them.

Anyway, Case closed......
